10 Essential Makeup Hacks Every Woman Should Know
Whether you’re obsessed with watching makeup tutorials and finding the perfect shade of lipstick and the world’s best mascara — or you’re one of the generally clueless when it comes to applying makeup to your normally unadorned countenance and kisser — there are always tips you can use to help yourself look your best, whether for a special occasion or for turning heads at the office and while out on the town. Here at the official Prim n Perfect beauty blog, we have compiled a list of 10 must-know beauty hacks that can be useful for everyone — from veteran MUAs to the uninitiated and generally cosmetically challenged — as well as everyone in between.
# 1 Exfoliating Isn’t Always Necessary – Over the last few years many beauty experts and everyday people have been obsessed with exfoliating one’s skin in order to get rid of dead epidermal cells and encourage the growth of new ones. Many even go so far use harsh chemical peels on their face that take days or even weeks to recover from in order to get that shiny, glowing, healthy looking acne-free skin all women (and most men for that matter) want. While it’s a good idea to gently exfoliate your skin at least every couple of days, what your skin usually needs is protection, not stress. Try a shower mask in order to prevent your face from drying out during a steamy bath. If you have oily skin that requires a daily scrub, try a gentle exfoliating facial buff or cellulose sponge and a soap containing coconut oil — which will kill pimple-producing germs and cut through make up and oils without over-drying and aging your skin. If your skin tends to be on the dry side, a quick rinse with cool water and dab with a clean towel is normally all you need.
# 2 Make your Lipstick Last Longer and Look Better with Essential Oils and Wax Lip Liner – Want fuller lips without using injections? Try peppermint oil or cinnamon oil to give thin lips that perfect pout. Then before applying lipstick, line your lips with an invisible wax liner — which is made to latch onto colors and hold them evenly. Start from the outside of your lips with the invisible liner, and then fill in the rest of your lips with a colored lip liner that matches your lipstick shade.
# 3 Blot and Set Lipstick with a Translucent Powder – You can easily make your lip color last even longer by simply using a tissue and some translucent powder. After applying one coat of lipstick, gently blot your lips with a tissue. Once you’ve done that, hold a clean tissue to your lips while lightly dusting translucent powder onto them with a powder brush through the tissue.
# 4 Always Test Foundation Colors on Your Neck – Most people’s arms are slightly darker than their faces and necks due to your arms not being protected from sun exposure like your face and neck are — by hats, glasses, as well as the shadows cast by your hair and head. Try testing your foundation colors on your neck for a true to life match that will look great.
# 5 Get Better Performing Mascara by placing it Against Your Skin – Mascara curls and holds better on your eye lashes when it is slightly above room temperature. Show your mascara some love by placing it close to your heart. Insert it in your bra for 10 minutes or so for a clump-free, easier application.
#6 Tap Your Makeup Sponge on Your Skin for an Inexpensive Airbrushed Look – If an airbrush kit is both out of your budget and beyond your ambition, you can still get a similar look by quickly and lightly patting foundation blender on your face. This technique, which is known as stippling, allows you to apply and blend foundation at the same time.
# 7 Use Color Correcting Concealer For a More Even Skin Tone – One trick professional makeup artists use is color-correcting in order to help conceal uneven skin tone — as well as any other discolorations, blemishes, or under eye bags. A light peach shade can be used to disguise dark circles, while yellow works great on blending out blemishes. Green will help reduce redness, and purple can help brighten dull, uneven olive tones.
# 8 Use Your Face Shape As A Template For Your Eye Brow Shape – If your face is square, your eyebrows should gently curve to soften the angles. If you have a face that’s more round, then you should shape your brows to be more angular since they can create the look of a more defined, angular bone structure. If you have a heart-shaped face, keep your brows tweezed short and neat. If you have a long face, you should extend your eyebrows in order to widen your features.
# 9 Heal Your Cracked, Dry Feet While You Sleep – If your feet look like they could use some TLC during the cold dry winter — or after being exposed to too much air conditioning in summer — try applying peppermint oil, Vaseline, or a petroleum based skin lotion to them at bedtime. Cover with a comfy pair of socks and voilà — they’ll look good enough for open toed shoes or sandals come morning!
# 10 Can’t Go For a Mani-Pedi? Try a DIY Nail Treatment – If your nails are looking yellow and unhealthy but you don’t have the time or money for a trip to the nail salon, try treating yourself to this do-it-yourself nail treatment. Mix 4 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and 8 tablespoons of baking soda into a cup (16 fluid ounces) of hot water. Repeat as many times as necessary, then apply a coat of clear nail polish. Finish with your favorite nail polish color to complete the look of freshly-groomed phalanges.
